Burbclave
A privately governed enclave that runs like a small sovereign state — its own paramilitary security, its own legal code, in the strongest versions its own standing apart from any surrounding nation. The defining twist is that it is a franchise: branded, reproducible, and bought into rather than born into. The term comes from science fiction and now serves as shorthand for any privately secured, gated jurisdiction.

Etymology§
Stephenson's portmanteau of suburb and enclave — a suburb that is also a sovereignty. The neighbouring term FOQNE (franchise-organised quasi-national entity) is Stephenson's mock-bureaucratic acronym for the same thing at greater scale.
The burbclave conceit took Snow Crash's near-future America to its logical extreme: the federal government has collapsed into a residual rump, territorial sovereignty has fragmented across burbclaves and franchise nations, and security is sold by whoever can deliver it on whatever terms the buyer accepts. General Jim's Defense System defends one suburb, the Crips defend another, the Mafia under Uncle Enzo runs pizza delivery as a franchise nation.
Stephenson wrote it as a cartoon, but the cartoon clarifies a structural principle: when the state cannot guarantee security, security becomes a service, and the institutional form that emerges to deliver that service is some version of the chartered private operator. The Cyberpunk 2077 Trauma Team conceit is the burbclave logic applied to emergency medicine; the Shadowrun megacorporate setting is the burbclave logic scaled to multinational capital.
The instrument matters as a literary marker because it gave a generation of readers a vocabulary for thinking about marketised security before the phenomenon was widely visible in the actual world. The vocabulary is loose and pulpy; it works as a heuristic, not as policy analysis.
