Iosef Lilianovich Dros (the Deserter)
Fictional character — the principal antagonist of Disco Elysium and the culprit behind the murder that drives the investigation. Former commissar of the Communist Party in Revachol; recruited as a volunteer revolutionary soldier at the age of fifteen, served as a model revolutionary and follower of scientific communism during the Antecentennial Revolution. Abandoned his unit and post out of sheer terror during the Coalition of Nations' assault on the Commune in the year '08, the event he has been living with for over forty years. Encountered in the final area of the game, at the sea fortress visible from the Whirling.
Stake§
The Deserter's stake within the fiction is the unbearable weight of having survived an event he should not have survived, with the rest of his life as ongoing penance and ongoing failure-to-die. His specific crime — shooting the mercenary Lely while Lely and Klaasje Amandou were having sex in Klaasje's bedroom, using a scoped Triangong 4-46 rifle — was an act of rage at what he read as the corruption of revolutionary ideals into bourgeois domesticity. The body was later hanged behind the Whirling as a cover-up by other parties.
The Deserter is the game's most theoretically charged character. His personal history is the history of Mazovian communism as a defeated ideology — youth-revolutionary commitment, ideological fervour, military service, the catastrophic battlefield collapse of '08 during which the Commune was destroyed, the subsequent half-century of hiding on the sea fortress where the present-day encounter takes place. The encounter is the game's most substantive engagement with the question of what survives a political defeat the size of the Antecentennial Revolution's, inside the person who survived it.
The murder itself is the working-out of his theoretical position in distorted form. He shot the mercenary because he saw the mercenary as a symptom of the bourgeois normality that had replaced the revolutionary horizon he had given his life to; killing the mercenary changes nothing about the political situation but provides a brief illusion of agency. The intellectual self-understanding the character has of his own act is articulated at length in the final dialogue, and the player can engage with it from any of the four ideological alignments the game permits.
The Deserter is the political- theoretical resolution of the game's central tensions. The dialogue scene at the sea fortress is widely cited as the game's most substantive single piece of writing; the 2024 Castro and Kiersey volume returns to it in several chapters as the working-out of the game's politics. The character is not a heroic figure or a clean ideological antagonist; he is what the world the game has built has made of someone whose commitments outlived their conditions of possibility.
