Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 open-world action-RPG developed and published by CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio behind The Witcher series. The game adapts Mike Pondsmith's tabletop RPG Cyberpunk (1988, with the 2020 second edition the most influential), under license from Pondsmith's R. Talsorian Games. Pondsmith served as a consultant on the game and contributed voice work; the setting and much of the worldbuilding lineage — Night City, the corporate factional structure, Trauma Team — is his. The video game is therefore a tertiary source on the corpus's terms: Pondsmith's tabletop game is the primary cultural reference, the Cyberpunk 2020 sourcebooks are the secondary material that codifies the setting in detail, and the 2020 video game is one popular extension of that material.
CD Projekt Red announced the game in 2012, demoed it in 2018, and released it in December 2020 after a sequence of well-publicised delays. The launch is part of the game's biography — it shipped in a state widely described as broken on previous-generation consoles, was pulled from the PlayStation Store for several months, and was substantially repaired through a sequence of patches across 2021–2023 culminating in the Phantom Liberty expansion (2023) and the 2.0 update. The current state of the game is closer to what was promised; the launch state is closer to what was shipped.
The relevant donation to this corpus is the Trauma Team figure — a corporate paramedic service that arrives fast, in armoured rotorcraft, with a private security team prepared to fight off rival operators or police to extract the subscriber. Trauma Team is a Pondsmith invention from the original tabletop, but Cyberpunk 2077's rendering is the most widely-circulated form of the figure. The image — armed first-responders for those who can afford a subscription, with the armed component framed as unsurprising and operationally necessary — has become the working shorthand for a particular configuration of privatised emergency services that can be discussed independently of any specific real- world precedent.
The studio's stake is commercial, with the standard incentives of a publicly-traded game developer: visibility, sales, downstream content. The political-aesthetic posture of the game itself is broadly satirical of late-stage corporate capitalism in the same register as Pondsmith's source material — the corporations are visibly malign, the privatised services are visibly dystopian, and the player's options for opting out are visibly few — though the satire coexists with the spectacle in a way that produces some of the same bifocal reading that Snow Crash invites. For this corpus, the game is the reference where the Trauma Team image lives in the popular imagination; Pondsmith's Cyberpunk 2020 sourcebooks are the better citation for serious analytical claims about the figure.
