The lineage of chartered violence
The inversion is elegant. Where Craig has signal flowing up the cortical hierarchy and being re-represented at the top, the inference frame has prediction flowing down and being checked against ascending error. Both architectures can accommodate the same fMRI activations and the same lesion-method findings, which is both the strength of the predictive-processing frame (it accommodates the existing data) and its empirical vulnerability (it does not always predict findings the direct-readout model cannot).
