The 1857 Sepoy Mutiny is the cleanest case: the Company's army turned on the Company, the Company's response was incoherent, and Westminster nationalised the lot under the Government of India Act 1858. The pattern is charter, divergence, scandal, absorption — and the absorption is always retrospective, never planned.

The lineage of chartered violence
The 1906–1996 gap is conspicuous and reveals what the field had to wait for. Sherrington had the concept; what he did not have was the tract-tracing primary work Craig would later do on the lamina-I projection in primates, the fMRI methodology Critchley would use to give the construct a behavioural handle, and the cytoarchitectonic detail Augustine would catalogue. The construct could be named in 1906; it could not be operationalised until those pieces were in place.

Reading the interoception literature
Sherrington had the concept and the name. Craig had the spinothalamic tract-tracing and the right-anterior-insula hypothesis. The reason the modern field credits 2002 as its founding moment rather than 1906 is that Craig's contribution was not the name — it was the specific anatomical commitment that made the construct measurable, predictable, and contestable.

Reading the interoception literature
The 1993 review is conspicuously the one that the Mestres-Ventura critique of unrecognised draws its force from. Reading these two reviews back-to-back makes the disciplinary point Mestres-Ventura makes more accessible than his short commentary alone does: a great deal had been carefully known about the interstitium before 2018, and the new organ framing landed in a literature that the new framing did not adequately situate itself against.

Reading the interstitium literature gated
The integrative-medicine appropriation of this literature is the part of the field hardest to read straight. Acupuncture mechanism claims, fascia-as-emotional-storage claims, and body-wide network readings of the Langevin and Benias work circulate in adjacent communities whose evidential standards are different from the journal literature's. The careful primary work (Langevin and Yandow 2002; Stecco's atlas) is genuinely empirical; the broader claims it gets pulled toward are not always.

Reading the interstitium literature
The 1980s gap is conspicuous. Lifton in 1973, Jameton in 1984, Williams in 1989 — and then nothing until Shay in 1994. The PTSD diagnostic moment in DSM-III (1980) absorbed and partly displaced the moral-content vocabulary the 1970s veterans' literature had been developing; the 1980s decade in which clinical psychiatry fully took up PTSD as a frame is also the decade in which the moral analytic was put on hold. The construct of moral injury surfaces in the mid-1990s partly because the limits of PTSD as a frame had by then become visible to the clinicians treating the chronic non-responders.
