The 1906–1996 gap is conspicuous and reveals what the field had
to wait for. Sherrington had the concept; what he did not have was
the tract-tracing primary work
Craig would
later do on the lamina-I projection in primates, the fMRI
methodology
Critchley would use to give
the construct a behavioural handle, and the cytoarchitectonic
detail
Augustine would catalogue. The
construct could be named in 1906; it could not be operationalised
until those pieces were in place.
