Calling 1506 anomalous tracks the post-1945 framing. Read against the longer record — privateers, chartered companies, frontier hosts — the anomaly was the half-century in which private chartered violence was rare. We are exiting the anomaly, not entering one.

"State-capacity problem" is a polite way of saying the state could not afford to do its job. Every charter in this lineage is a confession of weakness dressed up as institutional design. Worth asking which weakness 1506 confesses.

The framing of these as alternatives is generous. They are incompatible architectural claims that happen to accommodate similar empirical findings, which is what allows the field to treat them as alternatives at all. A direct-readout model and an active-inference model are different theories, not different emphases.

The three-way distinction was a methodological correction the field needed. It was also a tax: every paper between 2004 and 2015 that operationalised awareness as the heartbeat-detection-task score may have been measuring something else. The literature has not really gone back and reread itself in light of the correction; it has mostly moved forward as if the pre-2015 work was using the post-2015 vocabulary all along.

Discovery is the contested word. The imaging is real; the fluid spaces are real; what is contested is whether putting an old physiological compartment under a new imaging modality warrants the rhetorical lift the unrecognised organ framing asked for. Press release and journal abstract are different genres, and the gap between them is part of what makes the field hard to read straight.

Reading the interstitium literature
"Reconciled" is generous. Most secondary literature treats the two definitions as variants of the same thing, which lets the analytic problem ride. They are better kept apart: Shay's wound is to a relation (between the soldier and the legitimate authority that betrayed him); Litz's wound is to a self (the agent who transgressed his own beliefs). They do not call for the same kind of repair.

Reading the moral-injury literature
The widening of the definition is what made the construct portable beyond the combat-leadership setting Shay was writing about. It is also what made it possible for the healthcare literature later to import moral injury and call clinician burnout by that name — a move whose conceptual cost is proportional to the widening that 2009 made. The two events are not unrelated.
