Odise Cenaj
in Interstitium
American physician-pathologist. At the time of the 2021 Communications Biology paper, Cenaj was a senior pathology resident at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, working with Neil Theise and the broader interstitium- research group. He has since moved into staff pathology positions, with the interstitium-continuity work as a continuing research interest alongside primary clinical pathology practice.
Stake§
Cenaj's stake is professional and scientific. The first-author position on the 2021 paper as a senior resident is a significant early-career marker, and the empirical work — extending the 2018 Benias framework to demonstrate continuity across organ boundaries — is the kind of careful follow-up that the field needed after the press-driven 2018 framing.
The 2021 Communications Biology paper is Cenaj's principal contribution to the interstitium literature. The methodological move — using non-biological particles (tattoo pigment and colloidal silver) and hyaluronic acid visualisation to track interstitial spaces across tissue boundaries — gave the continuous body-wide network claim its empirical substance, where the 2018 paper had implied the continuity without showing it. The work was conducted within the Theise and Rebecca Wells programme at NYU and Penn that had produced the 2018 paper.
The paper's avoidance of the new organ framing that drew critique on the 2018 paper, and its more measured empirical claim about continuity across boundaries, represent the maturation of the interstitium-research programme into something the anatomy community could engage with on conventional terms. The 2025 Ordner et al. follow-up in Journal of Anatomy extends the continuity work into the lung.
Cenaj is the early-career figure whose first-author work on a high-profile follow-up paper helped consolidate the post-Benias interstitium programme. The senior- authorship of Theise and Wells provided the institutional weight; the empirical contribution and first-author position are Cenaj's. The continuing clinical-pathology career is the more durable trajectory, with the 2021 paper as a substantive early marker.
